Being a teacher is a challenging task because it requires your constant effort to keep your students engaged and create a positive classroom environment in order for them to feel comfortable in the process of learning. That is why the dynamic of the classroom and how we manage its structure are so crucial . In fact, there are several strategies that we can implement from the fundamentals principles of the different schools of thought in order to succeed and have a positive impact on the atmosphere in class. Those are:
Implication from learning theory.
Implication from studies of social Interaction and Communication.
Implication from studies in Developmental Psychology and Multicultural Education.
Implication from Behavioristic Psychology.
Implication from studies on Motivation and Students Engagement.
Implication from studies focusing on violence prevention in schools.
Nowadays it's considered that all schools of thought are important; because you will always need to implement some of them depending on the environment, school, students, country, their nationality and so on. In my personal opinion, two strategies that I implement every day during my work as a teacher, and also in my daily life are:
1) Implication from Learning theory, with both; a) Inquiry Instructional strategy and b) Direct Instructional strategy. As a matter of fact, in order for students to be on task and with a pro social behavior, as well as, to achieve their classroom goals; Sometimes as instructors we need to give the students direct orders or exposing them in the topic, we want to engage that would be a Direct Instructional Strategy. On the other hand, we may need to employ some Inquiry Instructional Strategies like providing a wide range of activities in which they can interact and communicate, form opinions, discussion and share ideas, all of which contribute to finding, concept creation and also invention.
2) Implication from Studies focusing on Motivation and student engagement
As for teachers and students, sometimes learning activities are not entertaining at all. In this implication we get to know as educators how we can motivate the students who can be on off task behavior or in a disruptive behavior that can affect the flow of the classroom dynamic. This is a common struggle when you have students in a range of age from 3 to 8 years old. There are two subcategories; A) Intrinsic Motivation: It’s when students are learning for the sake of learning, intrinsically motivated to engage in a learning activity because they enjoy it and they value it. This usually happen through the path of growing up; so that meaning that when the student grows this motivation can grow within. B) Extrinsic Motivation: It’s usually referring to an external source of motivation. Students are motivated to engage in learning activities not because they recognize value in experiencing the activity, but because they desire to receive rewards or want to avoid consequences imposed on those who are off-task. Two extrinsic motivators that can be implemented are grades and praise.
It can be concluded that some of the previous studies had given reflection on how applying implications can engage the students’ to have a pro social behavior in the classroom by using these tools in the teaching and learning process, in order to make a positive impact in the classroom dynamic .
